Emergency Response Guide
Severe Toothache
Symptoms: Intense throbbing pain, sensitivity to temperature, possible swelling or fever
First Aid: Rinse mouth with warm salt water, take over-the-counter pain relievers, apply cold compress to cheek
What we do: Examine the tooth, take X-rays to identify the problem (cavity, infection, cracked tooth), and provide appropriate treatment
Knocked Out Tooth
Symptoms: Complete loss of a tooth, bleeding socket
First Aid: Handle tooth by crown only, rinse gently, try to reinsert in socket, or place in milk. Seek care within 30 minutes
What we do: Clean the tooth and socket, carefully reinsert if possible, or discuss replacement options like implants or bridges
Broken or Chipped Tooth
Symptoms: Visible damage to tooth structure, sharp edges, possible pain
First Aid: Rinse mouth with warm water, apply cold compress, save any broken pieces
What we do: Evaluate the break, smooth sharp edges, and restore with bonding, crown, or other restoration
Lost Filling or Crown
Symptoms: Exposed tooth surface, visible gap, sensitivity
First Aid: Keep area clean, avoid chewing on that side, don't delay getting treatment
What we do: Replace the filling or crown, protecting the underlying tooth and restoring function
Abscess or Infection
Symptoms: Severe pain, swelling in cheek or jaw, fever, pus drainage, difficulty swallowing
First Aid: Rinse with salt water, take pain relievers, seek emergency care immediately
What we do: Assess infection severity, provide drainage if needed, prescribe antibiotics, and treat the underlying cause
Emergency Dentistry Questions
What constitutes a dental emergency?
Common dental emergencies include severe tooth pain, knocked-out teeth, broken or chipped teeth, abscessed teeth, severe bleeding from the mouth, dental trauma, and lost fillings or crowns. Any condition causing significant pain or affecting your ability to eat or speak should be evaluated immediately.
How quickly can I be seen for an emergency?
We prioritize emergency patients and can often schedule same-day appointments. If you're experiencing severe pain or trauma, call us immediately at 818-243-3838. If we're unavailable, we'll provide information about emergency care options.
What should I do if I knock out a tooth?
Handle the tooth by the crown, not the root. Rinse it gently with milk or saline solution if dirty, but don't scrub it. Try to reinsert it in the socket, or place it in milk or saline. Get to our office within 30 minutes for the best chance of saving the tooth.
How can I relieve toothache pain temporarily?
Rinse with salt water, apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek, and take over-the-counter pain relievers as directed. Avoid extremely hot or cold foods. These are temporary measures -you need professional evaluation to address the underlying problem.
Is a broken tooth always an emergency?
It depends on severity. A small chip may wait for a regular appointment, but a large break or break exposing the nerve requires immediate care. If you're in pain or concerned about infection, contact us right away.
