LANAP LASER DENTISTRY

LANAP Recovery & Aftercare

What to Expect After LANAP

One of the biggest advantages of LANAP is how gentle the recovery process is compared to traditional gum surgery. While your gums are healing and regenerating bone and connective tissue, you'll experience minimal disruption to your daily life.

Most patients return to work and normal activities the next day. There's typically mild soreness that's easily managed with over-the-counter pain medication. Swelling is minimal, and bleeding is minimal because the laser cauterizes as it works, sealing blood vessels and creating a stable clot.

The key to optimal healing is following our aftercare instructions carefully. Your body is doing remarkable regenerative work over the coming weeks and months, so simple steps like using a soft diet and following good oral hygiene will support this natural healing process.

Day-by-Day Recovery Timeline

  • Day 0 (Treatment Day): You'll feel mild soreness and numbness from the local anesthesia will wear off in 2-4 hours. Take prescribed pain medication or over-the-counter ibuprofen or acetaminophen as directed. Some patients experience minimal swelling. Rest as much as possible.
  • Days 1-3: Follow a liquid to very soft diet. Avoid hot foods and beverages for the first 24 hours. Mild swelling is normal. Do not brush or floss the treated areas. Gentle rinsing with warm salt water is okay. Continue pain medication if needed, but most patients require only occasional doses by day 2-3.
  • Days 4-14: Gradually introduce soft foods. You can start gently brushing other areas with a regular toothbrush, but continue using an ultra-soft brush on treated areas. Warm salt water rinses are beneficial for healing (mix 1/2 teaspoon salt in 8 oz warm water, rinse gently several times daily). Swelling should be improving.
  • Weeks 2-4: Transition back to a normal diet gradually, avoiding very hard or crunchy foods. Your gums are healing well at this point. Gentle brushing with an ultra-soft brush on treated areas is fine. You should see significant improvement in gum inflammation and bleeding.
  • Months 1-12: Bone regeneration is actively occurring. You'll have periodic follow-up visits at 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months to monitor healing and bone regeneration. Maintain excellent home care with gentle brushing and flossing. After about a month, you can return to your normal brushing routine, but continue being gentle around treated areas.

Diet Guidelines After LANAP

Eating the right foods after LANAP supports healing and prevents disruption of the delicate healing tissues. Here's how to adjust your diet through the recovery process:

  • Days 1-3 (Liquid to Very Soft Foods): Smoothies, yogurt, applesauce, protein shakes, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, soft soups, pudding, ice cream, cottage cheese, soft cooked vegetables (carrots, spinach, squash)
  • Days 4-14 (Soft Foods): Mashed potatoes, pasta with soft sauce, scrambled or soft-boiled eggs, soft fish, ground turkey or chicken, steamed vegetables, rice, oatmeal, soft bread, cooked legumes
  • After 2 Weeks (Gradual Transition): Slowly introduce firmer foods. Avoid very hard, crunchy, or sticky foods for at least a month (nuts, popcorn, hard candies, sticky caramel, hard chips)

Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol and smoking during recovery, as both impair healing.

Follow-Up Care Schedule

Follow-up visits are essential for monitoring your healing and tracking bone regeneration. Here's the typical schedule:

  • 1 Week: First follow-up to assess initial healing and check for any complications
  • 1 Month: Check overall healing progress and gum response to treatment
  • 3 Months: Re-measure pocket depths to assess how well pockets are reducing
  • 6 Months: Evaluate bone regeneration on X-rays; assess overall periodontal health
  • 12 Months: Final assessment showing complete healing and regeneration results
  • Ongoing: Maintenance cleanings every 3-4 months to prevent disease recurrence and maintain your results

These regular visits are crucial because they allow us to catch any issues early and ensure your gums and bone continue to heal optimally. Maintenance visits also help prevent the return of periodontal disease, which can happen if bacteria levels aren't kept under control.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long before I can go back to work?

Most patients return to work the next day. You may experience mild soreness but it's generally manageable with over-the-counter pain relievers.

Can I exercise after LANAP?

Light activity is fine after 24-48 hours. Avoid strenuous exercise for about a week as it can increase blood flow and slow healing.

When can I brush my teeth normally?

Avoid brushing treated areas for the first 3 days. After that, use an ultra-soft toothbrush for about 2 weeks before returning to your normal brushing routine.

Is some bleeding normal after LANAP?

Light bleeding or oozing is normal for the first 24-48 hours. If you experience heavy or persistent bleeding, contact our office.

How long does full healing take?

Soft tissue healing occurs within a few weeks. Bone regeneration is a gradual process that continues for up to 12 months after treatment.
